Redesigning a Community Super App Into a More Engaging Social Platform
Overview
AlumniHub is a super app for verified communities, including alumni networks, schools, universities, diaspora groups, and faith communities.
It brings discussions, dues, fundraising, marketplace, jobs, events, payments, and admin tools into one trusted platform.
I worked as the sole freelance product designer on the V2 redesign, rebuilding the app from scratch to make it more coherent, scalable, trustworthy, and engaging.
The Problem
V1 had traction, but the product had grown feature by feature.
Dues, payments, marketplace, jobs, chat, and announcements all existed, but the experience felt fragmented. The platform also needed to feel more social, so members had stronger reasons to return, engage, and stay connected.
Trust was also critical. AlumniHub handles money, membership identity, dues, and fundraising, so the product needed to feel clear, consistent, and credible.
My Role
I owned the full app redesign, design system, key product flows, and developer handoff.
I also used my product management experience to support customer discovery, mentor the founders, influence product direction, and help sharpen the product vision.
Beyond design, I supported the founders with product strategy, market analysis, fundraising narrative, and financial modelling.

What I Designed
1. A scalable design system
I created a Figma design system with colour tokens, typography, spacing, radius, effects, and core components such as buttons, inputs, badges, avatars, cards, and navigation.
This gave the product a stronger visual language and made the redesign easier to build and scale.
2. A more connected community experience
I redesigned the app around a more coherent social experience across feed, discussions, marketplace, jobs, events, payments, dues, and admin tools.
The aim was to move AlumniHub from a utility product into a more engaging community platform.
3. A simpler dues flow
Membership dues was the most complex flow.
Members could belong to schools, chapters, or sets, with different payment rules depending on the institution. I reduced the flow from seven screens to five by simplifying layouts, merging views, and bringing payment history into the journey.
The final flow helped members move from landing to receipt in three taps, while giving coordinators a separate experience for collecting and remitting dues.
4. Monetisation and notification systems
I designed a five-step banner advertising flow as a monetisation feature.
I also created a structured notifications specification covering triggers, recipients, channels, priority, settings, inbox rules, anti-fatigue limits, and localisation.

Outcome
AlumniHub now has a redesigned V2 app in active development, supported by a scalable design system, a clearer dues experience, a build-ready advertising feature, and an engineering-ready notifications spec.
The work helped turn a feature-heavy product into a more coherent and engaging platform, while giving the founding team a stronger product story for fundraising.
